Legislation relating to Crown reserves remained under the Land Act until the passing of the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978. This meant that the land was reserved from sale, leasing or licensing and from the provisions of the Mines Act. Further research is required about the reason for this. The first Land Act passed by the Victorian Parliament (the Sale of Crown Lands Act 1860) provided that the Governor-in-Council was able to reserve lands permanently or temporarily for a wide variety of public purposes. If the file was subsequently attached to another file that number is also given. It would appear that file movements were not only recorded on these cards but also, for a time at least in VPRS 14664 File Register, 'C' Files and in the Registers of Correspondence. These files are found either in VPRS 242 Crown Reserves Correspondence or VPRS 5357 Land Selection and Correspondence Files. If the file was closed and transferred to Public Record Office Victoria the card has this marked with the location of the file at PROV.
